Beauty Tips | Why Hire a Professional Makeup and Hair Stylist?

January 29, 2014

Professional Makeup and Hair Stylist - Annapolis Wedding Photography - Getting Ready photoI’m so happy I was able to take a break this morning to attend Amie Decker Beauty & Up Do For I Do’s “Gather with the Glam Squad” event. It was a fantabulous morning with coffee, apple cider, mimosas, lunch and sweet pastries at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club! There was even a lash and lip gloss bar, to try out a new look. PLUS it was a wonderful chance to see some of my favorite people in the wedding industry and get coached on my step and repeat by Travis Curry!

I am always a fan of local professionals gathering together to educate and learn from one another. It keeps our industry progressive and always growing. 2014’s word to live by INNOVATION!!

I loved how Ashley and Amie both termed their individual businesses as a “One Stop Beauty Shop”. Such a catchy phrase! I have always recommended Amie Decker Beauty and Up Do’s for I Do’s to my brides over the years. Both of their companies represent exactly the teams I would trust to make me feel beautiful, let alone touch my own face haha! So to have the opportunity to hear what they thought would be helpful tips and tricks to keep wedding makeup and hair fresh and perfect all day was AMAZING!

They have both beautified brides at over 1000 weddings. ONE thousand weddings in 10 years folks is impressive! That is incredible, they each had so many stories and you know they have literally seen it ALL.

Makeup and hair definitely set the stage for your entire wedding day. The beauty team ensures the women feel beautiful and glow all day! ALLLLL day you ask?! Yes one of the many reasons you hire a professional makeup and hair stylist. Professionals get paid the big bucks because they know how to enhance the longevity of makeup and hair in all weather conditions, ensuring the look lasts all day! There were so many tricks they told us and you know they have soooo many other tricks up their sleeves! Who knew to spray the hairspray in the direction you want the hair to sit/go?! Not me! Blew. My. Mind! Not only does spraying the hairspray in the right direction help with frizz but it also helps the hair to stay in the spot you want it longer!

Wedding Day of Beauty Recommendations:

  • When do you put the veil on? Put the veil on last! Don’t wear it around all morning, you risk spills, burns, rips, and many other mishaps we’ve all heard and/or seen happen!
  • Putting the veil on: Make it smile by flipping it over so it looks like it’s smiling and then “stab gently” -Ashley
  • Metal Comb on the veil: Veils with a metal comb will go in and come out of the hair easier, not messing up your hair do as much as a plastic comb.
  • REAPPLY lip gloss or lip color! This will keep your look fresh all day
  • Carry your Touch-up Kit*:
  • Insert bobby pins like an X. This will help to make sure the bobby pin stays in place!
  • Hairspray! Spray in the direction you want your hair to fall

The Beauty Team Touch-up Kit:

  • blotting papers
  • q-tips to dab under eye make up
  • bobby pins
  • black lash glue (for “Oprah” eye IF the fake eye lashes fall off)
WHEN does the Glam Squad recommend booking your professional hair and makeup artist?!?
9-12 months before your event. Unlike what The Knot and other wedding blogs may says, Makeup and Hair teams actually book well in advance, so 3 months is definitely not early enough. Most likely if you wait to long, your Beauty teams will be booked. So start searching once you book your venue!
What ORDER should the bridal party go with Makeup and Hair?
Amie and Ashley both stressed to DEFINITELY not let the bride go last. Some people may want a 30 minute timeline for when each appointment is, however these two beauty experts highly recommended having ALL the bridal party and ANY person who is wanting hair and makeup done there when the beauty team arrives. This way they can assess whose hair or makeup will take longest, so that they can finish all the looks early enough for any fixes or touch ups! Really really amazing advice! So brides do not go last, you don’t want to feel rushed on your own wedding day!
When is the best time to get your spray tanning?
Amie and Ashley’s companies both offer onsite organic spray tanning. They highly recommended doing a trial of your spray tans also! This will help you to see what shade works and doesn’t before the big day. Also, be sure to shave/wax and get your pedicures BEFORE your spray tan. Otherwise you will shave off tanned skin and your pedicure will take away dry skin leaving splotches! WHO KNEW!?
How dark/light should your tan be if you’re a bridesmaid?
Think about the rest of the wedding party. You want to blend in with the other bridesmaids and bride that day. Remember this is not YOUR day, it is the bride and grooms day. Their photographs will last a very long time, do you really want to be the darkest, orange, only island girl sticking out in the photos?!?
What can you do at the end of the night to freshen up your makeup/hair?
LIPGLOSS!
What a great way to start the 2014 wedding year off!

These are all getting ready photographs from weddings that had professional makeup and hair stylists. A pro team from the getting ready to the cake cutting and last dance, enables you to have time for sweet sentimental and playful moments that may not happen if you are rushing and behind!
