Heather & Jason | Washington DC Engagement Photographer

October 22, 2013

Heather and Jason met me at Clyde’s downtown Washington DC for their sunset engagement session.  They sported their favorite team the Capital’s jersey’s out front of where they had their first date inside The Gallery at Bar Louie!!  We hit quite a few neat spots around DC including, The Gallery, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial Park, & the DC waterfront.  Heather and Jason have a really cute love story, so I figured I’d let them share the gooshy details!  It’s pretty well-known that these sorts of stories have two sides, hers and his, so it’s only fair to share both. And as usual, ladies go first.

HER Side

To go back a little ways…

It was October 2010 and I had been single for almost two years. I was in the process of saving money to buy my first home when it hit me that a family would look nice in it, not to mention the fact that I wasn’t getting any younger! With the advice of one of my bridesmaids, April, I decided to sign up for online dating. I wasn’t shy at all on there (unlike SOME people) and spent hours looking through profiles and messaging people.

On December 31, 2010, I came across the profile of “thecapn32” and saw a very handsome young man in an orange polo shirt. I read through his profile and he mentioned that he was very shy. Well, shy wasn’t going to work with me! After reading his profile, I messaged him and said, “You don’t have to be shy with me.” I asked how his day was going, and the usual conversation starter lines. We continued to message each other back and forth all day. For the next couple of days it seemed like that’s all we did! We spoke of hockey and I discovered that he had been a fan since he was a kid, and I had recently became a fan. So he asked me if we wanted to meet up and go see a Capitals game.

The game was on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 7:00. I met Jason for the first time on the metro platform at Gallery Place. We were going to see a Capitals game. I saw his Chucks and thought to myself “what am I getting myself into” since I’m a Nike girl. I asked him out to Buffalo Wild Wings the next day to watch football. We got there around 1pm and pretty much closed the place down; we talked for hours. He walked me to my truck, where we shared our first kiss. That was all she wrote!

Jason is truly my backbone and the love of my life. I thank Sponge Bob (my version of God) every day that I met this wonderful man. I can’t wait to get married, buy a house with a white porch, have babies; those babies have babies; and grow old with him. You know its true love when you can picture yourself with him 40 years from now with your grandchildren running around in your front yard!

HIS Side

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.

Much respect to Jane Austen.

Yup, that was me; except, maybe, for the ‘fortune’ part – I wish. I found myself getting close to being 26 years old, with no real successful relationship to my name and feeling lonely. Pretty common for nerdfolk like me, but I wanted someone in my life. On the suggestion of a few friends, I set up an online dating profile. Most notable of these was Warren Perry, who met his then-long term girlfriend, now-wife this way.

I chatted with a few people here and there, but being naturally shy around new people I found it a bit difficult. In fact, in my profile I even mentioned how shy I was. Then I received a message from a pretty young blonde who said, quite succinctly, “You don’t have to be shy with me.”  We talked back and forth, and we had a common interest in hockey, though she had never been to a game. So, I offered to take her. Our first date was on January 8th (The Great 8th), and we saw the Capitals thrash the Panthers (it’s worth noting that every year since, we’ve gone to see the Caps play the Panthers as close to our anniversary as possible, and they always win; just saying). She met me on the Metro platform at Gallery Place in an oversized hoodie, the only Caps one she could get on short notice, and I was resplendent in my jersey and polished black Chucks.  I’m not sure it was love at first sight. My first thought on seeing her was that she was cute. Her smile was (is, still) infectious, and I wanted (still want to) pinch her cheeks. I don’t remember much of the game. We talked through it. And went to dinner, and kept talking, and went for drinks, and kept talking, and met up the next day and talked all day long. She was easy to talk to, and made me feel relaxed. She has that effect on people. Her easy-going attitude is one of the things I still love most about her, in opposition to me, laced tighter than a walrus in a corset. I realized that I couldn’t live without her. She makes me a complete person. With her, I can stand to get up each morning and smile through the day. With her, I can be a man. With her, I feel loved, more than ever before, and I firmly believe, ever again. So, with those thoughts in mind, I popped the big question, and she said yes. And she’s been making me look at wedding venues, and dresses, and cakes, toppers, ties, flowers, photographers, color palettes, invitations, dates, china patterns, candy, food, DJs, and who knows what else since.  But I love her. And on June 8, 2014, in front of all our closest friends and relatives, she’ll make me the happiest man I’ll ever be.

It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.

Thanks, Dickens.
