I photographed The Honey Hive in Edgewater for their new website and crew photographs! Rachael Powers the owner of Cakes by Rachael – Annapolis Artisan Cake and Cupcakes, has turned The Honey Hive into a beautiful space with delicious savory and sweet treats. The Honey Hive features a new artist on their walls each month. I love how much community Rachael has created in her shop. While taking their new food photographs I also got to taste test! The caprese sandwich YUM was my favorite! Rachael and her Honey Hive crew are a warm, fun, spirited team and were so fun to photograph.
Since Rachael runs a very busy wedding cake and cupcake business as well as The Honey Hive cafe, I wanted to be sure to share some of her words of wisdom when searching for your wedding cake, cupcake, or sweets.
Q&A with Rachael Powers of Cakes by Rachael – Annapolis Artisan Cakes and Cupcakes:
How long have you been creating cakes/cupcakes?
I started making cakes and cupcakes when I was 12 years old and I unofficially started Cakes by Rachael when my Mom bought me Cakes by Rachael Business cards as a funny Christmas Gift. I officially started Cakes by Rachael on my 21st Birthday. We will have our 3 year Anniversary this Saturday! MARCH 22!! YAY!
How far in advance should a cake company be booked?
We book over a year in advance for weddings. And usually 1-6 months in advance for custom cakes. We also take short orders for simple birthday cakes too if we are not over booked!
What is your favorite style of cake?
I LOVE Creative Shaped cakes that are out of the box and different! I LOVE LOVE LOVE when customers give me a theme and let me be creative.
Where is your favorite wedding location?
I LOVE Herrington on the Bay and Historic London Town and Gardens. The flowers and landscapes at these venues are just breathtaking. I always stop and look at all the beautiful flowers since I am an avid Gardner when I am not baking.
How far do you transport your wedding cakes?
Although we specialize in the Annapolis area, we also travel to Baltimore, DC, and the Eastern Shore. The longest distance we have gone is Delaware.
Do you create artisan cupcakes and cakes for destination weddings?
Yes, Annapolis is a destination wedding location for many of our Military couples who come to get married in the Naval Academy Chapel. We often have to be creative in these cases and do over the phone consultations or tastings with friends.
Do you have a favorite cake?
My Favorite cake changes every day! Right now my Favorite flavor is Passion Fruit with Lemon Filling and Cream Cheese Icing!! YUM!!
