Photographing ALL Love…

“And I can’t change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love, my love, my love
No freedom ’til we’re equal…”
From “Same Love” by Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis ft Mary Lambert

Today while listening to my XM a very impressive song came on and really caught my attention.  So much, that I bought it and  listened to it over and over on the way home…The song encapsulates my thoughts surrounding the struggle for a Washington DC Wedding in the LGBT community is going through in many states, just trying to “approve” their love and right to wed the love of their life.  Whether you agree or agree to disagree, this song makes a POIGNANT statement…

There is no Freedom until we are all equal.

Wow.  Never thought of it in that way.  I have always felt that love was love.  I was brought up believing that you love someone’s soul, their insides, and that the outside exterior never should dictate how much or little you love someone.  Whether love of a friend or romantic partner, it saddens me that as we grow we still ignore the rights of so many to honor their own feelings and wants. The same joy the “straights” have the freedom to experience every day: exchanging vows and having the law honor their commitment. Why has “LGBT” turned into a description of certain weddings instead of it just being a union of two people who love one another? Why aren’t these unions described the same as opposite sex weddings?  After all, it’s the same love…

I don’t want this post to turn into a political statement or a confrontational post,  I merely want to share my view on the meaning of love…the kind of love I photograph.  I am not here to judge any feelings, thoughts, or choices based on who and how you love…I am passionate about naturally capturing your unique love.  Most of all…..

Simple. Passionate. Blind. Undying. Love.

After all, isn’t it what we all hope for?  A companion who gets us, who doesn’t just see our lashes, freckles, curves, and dimples. Someone who feels your heart beat, senses your soul’s rhythm and can read your mind just by starring into your eyes.  Yes, I am well aware that love is not easy, it is not all Hallmark cards and night after night of dancing in the kitchen.  However, love is exactly what we believe it is in our own hearts; not what someone else believes in their heart.

Love is to a person like the sea to a sailboat – always connected, rocking back and forth, tipping once in a while. However, with the right care and attention, that love can float and sail away to an endless destination. I think even I can make love more complicated than it actually is. Jon and Par’s Washington DC Wedding reminded me a while ago what pure easy love felt like…no stereotype…no color…no “look”, just a feeling!

Happy Sunday, hope this post makes you want to go grab a kiss from someone special!
